HISTORY

The name Bernardina refers to our mother and grandmother, who was the first person in the family to produce coffee in the 1960s.

We belong to the second and third generation dedicated to the coffee activity.

Finca Bernardina started with the second generation in 1987, managed by Felix and Iluminada Aguilar, with an area planted with 2 hectares of caturra and catuai, and shortly after the farm was expanded.

At present we are 5 people who collaborate on the farm permanently, doing cultural and management work, and temporarily in the harvest period, from 25 to 30 employees.

DESCRIPTION

Our farm is located in the region of Renacimiento, specifically at the buffer zone of La Amistad International Park, it has a natural mountain landscape with native trees and diverse species of birds, mammals and reptiles. We have 18 hectares of which 4 of them are virgin forest reserve, 2 hectares of secondary forest and the rest planted in coffee, fruit trees and timber trees.

The approximate production per year is 200 to 300 qq (100 pounds bags).

The Typica and Bourbon varieties are currently being introduced.

PROCESS

Regarding the processes, we carry out the three types: wash, honey and natural. Drying mostly in the sun on African beds, and in concrete patios.

We are currently starting trials of experimental processes with small amounts of coffee, specifically with the theme of fermentation.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRACTICES

For us, one of the most important ecological practices is the conservation of our soils and we choose to perform undergrowth control without the use of herbicides. Another practice is the planting of native trees as shade in coffee plantations.

In our farm, we not only produce coffee, we also protect our fauna and flora and preserve the virgin forests which contribute to protect the water sources that give life to our environment.

Our Estate, Santa Elena, is located on the slopes of the iconic Piedra de Lino Hill that surrounds part of the scenic Boquete Valley. It has an extension of 44 hectares, 20% primary rainforest, an altitude of 1200 to 1530 masl, and a year-round temperature that ranges between 62ºF and 75ºF.

This land has been dedicated to coffee for almost 100 years. The estate was acquired in 2011, and we began an intensive process of modernization and reorganization of the farm and its production processes at that time; as a result, we have been renovating the entire plantation year after year since then.

The conditions of our microclimate; the volcanic soil, altitude, temperature, rain, and winds are uniquely combined shaping our “terroir” which is reflected in the delightful aroma and flavor that distinguish our coffee.

Catuai, Caturra, Obata, Geisha, and Pacamara are some of the arabica varieties we grow on our estate.

Our coffee cherries are selectively handpicked by our team at its peak of maturity and submitted to traditional processing methods processes such as natural, washed and honey and as well as innovative alternative methods. Afterwards, it’s slow-dried on African beds in our solar dryer.

Our team that lives on our establishments have safe and clean housing standards.

We ensure their living area stays neat and well ventilated at all times, guaranteeing pleasant and comfortable conditions to encourage productivity.

At Cafelino, we are faithfully committed to environmental sustainability, employee well-being, and exceptional product quality.

When farmers were abandoning the coffee farms, MAS CAFE PANAMA championed the cultivation of coffee helping preserve Boquete’s coffee culture. The properties purchased were in terrible shape. We were not discouraged, We dug our heels deep into the fertile volcanic soil and started working the land that we called home.
Working long physically demanding days, we improved not only the coffee plants but the surrounding ecosystem, working hard to create sustainable agricultural land. Now the coffee plants live in harmony with native fruiting trees and the diverse wildlife of the region.
MAS CAFE PANAMA keeps working hard on continuous improvement of current plants and searching for new varietals that will produce a quality cup of coffee. We believe that the potential of Boquete is just now beginning to be tapped into, holding true to the belief that Boquete is the finest coffee growing area in the world.
